we all use orkut....its our lifeline in classes......:)
i have one basic question about which i havent been able to find any answer yet....
How will Google earn money from Orkut ?????
is it going to be through the same word ads or some other way this time..i dont think they are ever going to make it paid...
i hope u all know how orkut started......for those who dont a very brief history....
Google has a policy of giving every employee 20% of their work time for their own projects....and orkut is the result of one of such projects by its employees....and if u dont know the name find out from orkut.. :)

well why not....even if Google has a lot of money right now..its every venture needs to support itself....why should some other venture pay for orkut???
Well how about this,
Probably google wants to get many users hooked on to its services and then put them up at a nominal charge at a later point of time. Charging even a dollar a year from all the users of orkut is a lot of money.
I know you would say that people will migrate, but then look at the trade off also, 1 dollar a year is not a lot of money, probabaly you must be spending more for a cup of coffee at a CCD or Barista.
Then I agree there are a hundred other look alikes, but how many of them are ORKUTs, by this I mean how many of them have your friends, your networks, easy interface and ofcourse google behind it.
Then look at this also, orkut helps google profile its users, most of the orkut users, let say almost all of the orkut user uses Google. And if I have an accurate profile of a large number of users who use my search engine, then that helps me in targetting my existing advertisements more effectively. Pushing the right ads to the right people, so in this model, orkut becomes an extension to google. In fact it is helping google in this model.

even if it charges nominal amounts....its still monetisation....so its all about how do u earn money...even if u take small amounts from each user...users have a huge chance of resisting if a free service they enjoyed till now suddenly becomes and orkut is no essential thing...mails and chat and other networking sites are always there....and suppose orkut becomes paid..though a nominal amount and some other person comes out with a better social networking site free of charge for the user...employing some other method of monetisation..then orkut might just perish
and ya i agree Orkut is helping Google make database....
